Kinreizuka Tumulus

Chiba Prefectural Designated Historical Site: Kinreizuka Tumulus

Kinreizuka Tumulus is a keyhole-shaped burial mound constructed in the Kofun Period,located on a sand dune called Hamanagasuka in the lower reaches of the Obitsu River.

It is roughly 90 meters in size, and only part of the rear circular part remains today. In the rear circular part, there is a tunnel-shaped stone chamber of 10 meters in length and 2.2 meters in maximum width.

Inside this stone chamber, there are stone coffins[A1] made of a material called Greenschist.

Kinreizuka Tumulus was built at the end of the 6th century AD, and more than 3 burials have taken place there.

Gold bells and many gilt bronze items have been discovered there, as well as 19 decorated swords indicating that those buried in Kinreizuka Tumulus held great power.

The excavated articles have been designated as National Important Cultural Properties and are on display at Kisarazu City Museum “Kin no Suzu” (“Gold Bell”).
